Global warming revisionism

December 29, 2007 Politics, Trends | Leave a Comment

If the data supports a belief in human induced global warming, then nobody should be afraid to discuss the views held by many dissenters. Personally, I’m sitting on the fence. I have noticed in my own hometown a gradual increase in winter temperatures, but that in itself does not prove a correlation with human activity. I admit I have not read the scientific papers… I should probably do that. Anyhow, the following is a summary of the opposing perspective.

The great gold standard debate

December 29, 2007 Economics, Precious Metals | 1 Comment

What follows is a fantastic debate between Ron Paul and the Federal Reserve bank of New York governor Charles Partee from 1983. It’s quite long, but I highly recommend watching all the way to the end, including the rebuttals and Q&A.

Evidence capitalism works

I recently came across the following entrepreneurship ranking which I found quite interesting. The list is produced by amalgamating the World Bank’s Doing Business Report and the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor produced by Babson College and the London Business School to create an entirely new ranking referred to simply as the “FSB score”. Combining both these sources with equal weighting creates a new figure that takes many things into account, including: starting a business, operating a business and something called high-expectation entrepreneurship.

Expect to hear a lot about “sovereign funds” in the near future

The financial industry is on the verge of collapse. Losses from sub-prime loans could exceed the entire American banking industry’s capital base. With such a terrifying prospect looming on the horizon, it’s no surprise bankers have their eyes on the world’s last pot of gold — sovereign wealth funds.

2008: The year gold goes mainstream?

December 28, 2007 Economics, Precious Metals | 18 Comments

Those of us who invest in gold may already consider it to be mainstream, but if you ask most casual investors, more likely than not, they have never really considered buying gold. They may not even know it’s a serious option. For them, perhaps the ubiquitous cartoon image of a bag and big black printed dollar sign comes to mind. But now that ETF’s are beginning to enter the language of typical mutual fund investors, gold bullion has become more accessible than ever.

The MSM just doesn’t get it

Update 2: It’s official, Ron Paul has been excluded
Update 1: This may have been a misunderstanding. The article still stands for now, we’ll see how this plays out.

Ron Paul is excluded from the next FOX news debate.

Everyone is disgusted with both party establishments and this only serves to remind us why. Of course we would rather Ron Paul be on stage, but what FOX news doesn’t understand is that a major part of his appeal is his ability to make the Republican establishment feel pain and humility. The more they play to Ron Paul’s outsider image the more he appears to be the only guy capable of truly significant changes and the more his appeal will ultimately grow.

SCO delisted from NASDAQ

December 27, 2007 Business | Leave a Comment

All linux supporters should be quite enthralled with this news. SCO is of course the company (with Microsoft funding) that first claimed ownership over many parts of the open source operating system, but famously refused to indicate exactly which parts. They recently declared chapter 11 bankruptcy, and as a result will be removed from the NASDAQ exchange effective Dec 27. Read the news release here, read about their history here.

Change the World

Ron Paul’s speech is after the introduction. Please watch this and tell me if you can imagine any other candidate speaking the truth with such clarity. A candidacy like this comes along once in a generation. This is the last chance to save America from bankruptcy. Please pass this along to more people. I’m very serious about this. Ron Paul is the only one worthy of a vote.

Worst. President. Ever.

Seven years of flaming Bush… not one useful law.

As we begin the annual process of reviewing the year that was and preparing for the year that begins, I thought it would be painfully interesting to re-live the past 7 years of Bush. Keep your spirits up, just one more to go… hopefully.
