I think the author of this article has missed a few key concepts of what Venus/Zeitgeist are proposing (although I for one appreciate anyone willing to step up and say something, anything, especially when it can generate the amount of comments seen here). Our civilization has been on a destructive, irrational path for thousands of years. Irrational because for the most part, the fundamental needs of the human being have been ignored. Just as our physical bodies need food, clothing, shelter, air, sunlight etc, our MINDS also have basic needs. Humans completely thrive and excel whenever they follow their passions, when they LEARN new things, face and conquer challenges, CREATE something new (whether just for themselves or for the betterment of others). When a human is PASSIONATE about life, many positive things happen - they leap out of bed in the morning and can't wait to face the day, they have so much more energy, most if not all addictions/obsessive behaviors tend to fade away either completely or partially (obviously some high levels of addictions need to also be treated). When a human's physical and mental needs are met, their EMOTIONAL health also increases dramatically. They simply feel so much better in themselves, they are HAPPY, and that happiness automatically rubs off on other people. When a human is genuinely happy (because their other needs are being met), their stress goes away and they are CALM and PEACEFUL and simply put, they are content with life. A human who has ticked all those boxes (physical, mental, emotional well-being) is a joy to be around. They will naturally attract others. They might choose to work on some endeavor together and the synergistic affects might produce valuable new technologies or products well beyond the capability of a single person. If they meet a partner who has also met all their own basic needs, and if attraction grows between them, they may decide to stay together and start a family. ANY CHILDREN BORN TO SUCH CALM, PEACEFUL, LOVING PARENTS WILL AUTOMATICALLY COPY THE SAME BEHAVIORS. Those children, the next generation, would be so much better adjusted to life right from the start. The irrational world we live in at the moment was created from many different problems, but one KEY driver has been that human civilization has forgotten or ignored our need for mental well-being. This has resulted in so many of the problems we are witnessing today (and in history). Dead-end jobs are the absolute opposite of passionate lives. We drag ourselves out of bed in the morning with mostly negative thoughts filling our heads. Even if we like our jobs, we are often burdened with other things like bills to pay, house and car and student loans, worrying about our friends and family, having to deal with other people's negative behaviors each day. We hide from all that negativity by distracting ourselves with things like entertainment (nothing wrong with entertainment at all, BUT if you are watching that show as an escape from something, then it's not entertainment as such, it's a distraction). We distract ourselves with many other things as well such as drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, sugar, coffee/cola, sex, food, gambling, computer games, gossip magazines and on and on (again, there is nothing wrong with most of those things, but if they are used as a DISTRACTION from life/pain/negativity, given enough time those things often become part of the problem, leading to terrible addictions, and INCREASINGLY negative thoughts and feelings). Note: we all need a LITTLE distraction from time to time, just to "zone out" in our heads, but like a head-ache pill, it's for TEMPORARY RELIEF only. As each person in today's sick society interacts with other people, each of whom tends to carry some sort of negativity to lesser or greater degrees, all those negative FEELINGS are exchanged and shared and the whole society sinks into ever greater levels of depression, helplessness, hopelessness, anger, hatred, intolerance, low energy, wall-building (between individuals, groups, cultures, countries). As humans in this society partner and have children, those children copy and learn many negative traits and behaviors from their parents. Those children, the next generation, have got many PROBLEMS right from the start. In a sick, negative society like we have today, some individuals' and groups' behaviors go way beyond most peoples' behaviors. They lie and steal, they murder and rape. Still others choose a different, but far worse, destructive path. These "mega-destructive" people are so sick in their minds that they actually ENJOY CONTROLLING OTHERS and SEEKING POWER. They "get-off" on DESTROYING LIVES. These "mega-destructive" people and groups are often found lurking in organizations where they can do the most damage (ie have the most wide-reaching control over other people) - places like large businesses (but not all companies are like this), governments, religious groups. These mega-destructive people and groups are addicted to POWER. Money for them is just another tool to control and destroy everything. AND THESE ARE THE SAME PEOPLE AND GROUPS WE USUALLY ENTRUST TO MAKE OUR SOCIETYS' DECISIONS!! And generation after generation of them have learnt from their predecessors and have honed their skills of manipulation and control over "the masses". That's why our world is so messed up today. At every level of society, there is sickness and negativity. And the world is buckling under the weight of all that negativity. Our limited resources are being pushed harder and faster than ever before in the history of this planet. 7 billion people and accelerating - and most of us are miserable! ### Yet the answer is surprisingly simple. While any solution will likely have some flaws in it, from what I've seen over the years, the Venus/Zeitgeist proposals have the best chance of success. Why? Because they understand that humans have needs beyond the physical, they understand that mental and emotional needs must also be met. They understand THAT PEOPLE NEED TO BE HAPPY! Happy people (who are happy because ALL their basic needs have been met), left alone to follow their own path, will thrive and excel. OWNING STUFF will fade in importance, and simply LIVING LIFE will become what matters. People will probably still form hierarchies such as businesses to invent and create new products (machines still need a blueprint to work from to build things, at least until computers reach a level of artificial intelligence to do that themselves), or research teams similar to those found at universities today, or hobby/special interest groups. But no one will be trying to manipulate or control or gain power. It simply wouldn't be necessary for any reason, and a complete waste of everyone's time. And in just a few short generations, these sick concepts will have faded away from Earth forever. Of course, ultimately, easily, we will begin to reach out from our planet and explore and expand and tap into the vast, near unlimited resources of the universe (the possibility of consuming all the resources of the universe in the far far future is well beyond the scope of this posting). Just scroll down the diverse view points placed on this blog and you find resistence, skeptisism, fear, suspicion, and much self absorbed (no offence meant to anyone in particular)retoric. Recently I had a friend come to stay and I talked to her about the zeitgeist movement. It was astounding how she said "but I can't do anything about it (monetarism)." This is what holds our world back; the learnt helplessness and self defeating powerlessness that has been programmed into so many wage slaves by the system. The day we start to work as a collective group for not just our own betterment but for our societies betterment - that's the day we'll stop holding ourselves back. Nothing could stop us if tomorrow the people of the world downed their money and said "yeah lets work for free and make things better for us all" but it does take global commitment and individual awareness of our species potential. I wondered what 'the masses" would do - so clearly a similar train of thought. I think this issue would clarrify itself over time - people living in a society where they are not slaves to the paying of debt and bills will naturally take time to find out more about what they really like to do. So instead of workingin the shop because that's the skill set this money society values you might follwo your interests - and every sucessful person who is truely happy n their work has followed their interest. Consider also, that if education is changed to a critical thinking /divergent thinking style then people will refind the love of learning every person is born with but looses in this capitalist society because they are conditioned to not think for themsleves and to fight everyone else for survival. I think there is a great deal of hope in this Venus Project - but more discussion is necessary. Hey what a good question.
