Is this the coolest thing you’ve ever seen?January 8, 2008
They say intelligent people point out the obvious and geniuses point out the obscure, so this idea may not be genius, but it’s pretty damn close. It’s so simple it makes me want to scream. Why don’t we already run our cars with compressed air — CO2 cartridges have been around for a long time, so this isn’t exactly a new phenomenon. Anyhow, I’ll just have to assume that since 15 years of development was required to get this far they must have had some difficult engineering problems to resolve. Regardless, the end result is a tantalizing window to the future — 200 km and highway speeds on a few dollars of compressed air right out of a plain old compressor. And the whole car will only cost about $7000 to buy brand new. They are designed in France, manufactured in India, and will be available for consumers in those two markets (including the rest of Europe) but apparently not in North America anytime soon. Sigh. (Interesting that I found this just as I’m preparing to discuss peak oil…)
